How Much Gravel Fills a Gravel Grid?

Most plastic gravel grids are 2 inches (50 mm) tall. To fill a grid with these cells, you need approximately 1.67 ft³ of gravel per 10 ft². For 2-inch grids, our default depth is set to 2 inches which gives you an accurate estimate.

For small areas (under 200 ft²), bagged gravel works well. Larger installations should order in bulk tons for cost efficiency. Gravel grids hold the gravel in place, so minimal waste occurs.

Gravel Grid Fill Volume Formula

Plastic gravel grids or geocells are filled with gravel to the top of the cell. The fill volume equals the grid area × cell depth (the internal height of the grid). Since grids typically have 80–85% open cell area, the actual gravel volume needed is approximately 80–85% of the full grid volume.

Prepare the Sub-Base

Install 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone beneath the gravel grid panels. A stable sub-base prevents the grid from flexing under vehicle loads.

Use the Right Stone Size

Use 3/8"–1/2" pea gravel or small angular stone. Gravel smaller than 3/8" sifts through grid openings; larger than 3/4" won't distribute evenly across cells.

Overfill Then Sweep

Pour gravel 1/4 inch above the grid surface and sweep it across until cells are level-full. Gravel will settle slightly after use, so slight overfilling is normal.

Grid panels clip together and can be cut with a utility knife or saw to fit edges and curves. Always allow 1/2 inch of overhang at border edges for edging or flush cuts.

How much gravel do I need to fill a gravel grid?

For a 2-inch (50 mm) deep grid: you need approximately 1.67 ft³ of gravel per 10 ft² of grid area (2 inch depth × open cell factor of 80%). Example: 200 ft² area at 2 inch depth = 200 × (2/12) ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards, multiplied by 0.82 for grid structure = approximately 1.0 cubic yard actual gravel needed.

What size gravel is best for plastic gravel grids?

3/8" to 1/2" (10–13 mm) pea gravel or angular crushed stone is ideal for filling gravel grids. It flows easily into the grid cells, stays in place under traffic, and provides good drainage. Avoid very fine gravel or sand (which compacts and blocks drainage) and stones larger than 3/4" (which won't settle evenly in cells).

Can gravel grids be used as a driveway?

Yes — gravel grids designed for vehicular use are rated for 40–60 tons per square meter. Heavy-duty (4-inch cell) grids can support fully loaded semi-trucks. Light-duty (2-inch cell) grids are suitable for passenger vehicles. Always install on a properly compacted 4–6 inch gravel sub-base to ensure load distribution.

Do gravel grids need a fabric underlayer?

Yes, always install non-woven geotextile fabric between the soil/subbase and the gravel grid. This prevents soil from migrating up into the grid cells and gravel from sinking into soft ground. Use fabric rated for heavy-duty ground stabilization applications (at least 6 oz/yd²).

How do I prevent gravel from escaping the grid edges?

Install plastic or metal landscape edging around the perimeter of the grid at full height. The grid panels themselves can be staked to the ground at edges. An alternative is to create a concrete or wood border curb that contains the grid and holds gravel in the perimeter cells.

How long do gravel grids last?

High-quality plastic gravel grids made from HDPE (high-density polyethylene) are UV-stabilized and rated for 20–50 years when properly installed. The gravel itself rarely needs replacement unless contaminated with soil. Periodic top-dressing with fresh gravel may be needed every 5–10 years to replenish gravel lost through traffic and weather.
